Do I still file a return if tax was deducted at source?
Last updated
Yes. Tax deducted at source (TDS) is tax paid in advance on your behalf; it does not replace the return. If your income is above the tax-free limit (৳4,00,000, higher for some categories), or you meet any condition on the NBR's list, you must file.
What TDS does in the return
- The return works out your total tax, and the tax already deducted comes off it.
- If anything is left, you pay it.
- If more was deducted than you owe, the excess can be claimed back or set against a later year; the tax authority decides which.
Keep the TDS certificates from your employer and bank; the return needs them. Who files and when: the return filing guide.
